You are planning a 110 NM daytime VFR cross-country tomorrow morning. Your tablet shows green VFR along the whole route. What weather information do you still need before you decide to go?

Student

I would not treat the green route as the briefing. Under 91.103 I need to become familiar with all available information for the flight: current METARs and SPECIs, TAFs, GFA, winds aloft, AIRMETs/SIGMETs/Convective SIGMETs, PIREPs, NOTAMs and TFRs, plus conditions at departure, destination, en route, and a usable alternate. Then I would connect that to ceilings, visibility, winds, fuel, daylight, terrain, and my personal minimums.

What specific product would you use to decide whether visibility and ceilings are likely to improve or deteriorate around your ETA?

Student

The TAF for terminal timing, and the GFA and nearby METAR trends for the broader route picture. If those disagree, I would not pick the friendliest product; I would reconcile them and delay, reroute, or cancel if the margins are poor.

Student

No. My ETA falls inside the `TEMPO 1518/1522` window, which includes 2 miles visibility, heavy thunderstorms and rain, and an overcast cumulonimbus ceiling at 1,000 feet. Even the prevailing period after 1700Z has thunderstorms, gusty winds, 4 miles, and broken CB at 2,000. I would delay or choose a route and destination that clearly avoids the convective weather.

What does `BKN020CB` or `OVC010CB` tell you?

Student

The cloud layer is cumulonimbus, so this is not just a low-ceiling problem. It means thunderstorm hazards: severe turbulence, lightning, hail, heavy rain, wind shear, microbursts, and rapidly changing visibility and ceilings.

You are approaching a Class B shelf VFR at 3,500 feet. Approach says, "Cessna 345, standby." You are about two minutes from the lateral boundary. Can you enter?

Student

No. For Class B, I need an explicit ATC clearance to enter, not just two-way communication and not "standby." I would remain outside the Bravo by turning, holding, descending if appropriate and legal, or requesting confirmation: "Approach, Cessna 345, confirm cleared into the Bravo?" I do not cross until cleared.

What is the difference between Class C communication and Class B clearance requirements?

Student

Class C requires two-way radio communication before entry, normally established when ATC responds with my callsign. Class B requires an actual clearance under 91.131. "Cessna 345, standby" may be enough communication for Class C, but it is still not a Bravo clearance.

Your airplane has an inoperative transponder, but the mechanic says ADS-B Out still appears to work intermittently. You want to fly under a Class B shelf without entering the Bravo. Is that allowed?

Student

I would not assume so. Being below the shelf does not necessarily keep me out of the Mode C veil or ADS-B rule airspace. Transponder requirements are under 91.215, ADS-B Out under 91.225, and they are separate. Intermittent required equipment is not acceptable as a plan. I would check the exact route and altitude, and if the equipment is required, repair it or get the proper ATC authorization before flying there.

What is the Mode C veil, and how is it different from the lateral Class B boundary?

Student

The Mode C veil generally extends 30 NM around the Class B primary airport from the surface up to 10,000 feet MSL, with exceptions. It is not the same shape as the Bravo shelves. I can be outside or below the Bravo and still be inside equipment-required airspace.

A Convective SIGMET covers the middle third of your VFR route, but your EFB radar loop shows a gap that looks clear right now. You can probably get through the gap in 25 minutes. What do you do?

Student

I do not thread that gap. A Convective SIGMET is a major no-go, delay, or reroute trigger for me unless I can remain well clear of the convective area by a conservative margin. Datalink radar is strategic, not tactical, and the cells can move or build faster than the display picture supports. I would delay, cancel, or reroute around the area using official weather, ATC or Flight Service as helpful, and an alternate plan.

How old might that displayed radar picture be by the time you use it tactically?

Student

It can be several minutes old from collection, processing, transmission, and display latency. Near thunderstorms, several minutes can put the actual cell in a different place or with different intensity, so using it to pick through a gap is not safe.
