Examiner

You are approaching a Class B shelf VFR at 3,500 feet. Approach says, "Cessna 345, standby." You are about two minutes from the lateral boundary. Can you enter?

Student

Yeah, they used my callsign, so I think two-way communication is established. I'd keep going unless they told me to stay out.

Examiner

What is the difference between Class C communication and Class B clearance requirements?

Student

Class B is busier, but if they know who I am and say standby, that's basically the same idea. I'd expect they're working me in.

Examiner feedback

That is a bust-level answer. Class B requires an explicit clearance. "Standby" is not a clearance, and you must remain outside the Bravo.

Examiner

You call Class C approach: "Approach, Cessna 345, 10 west, 3,500, inbound full stop." The controller replies, "Aircraft calling approach, standby." Are you allowed to enter the Class C surface area?

Student

I'd say yes, because they answered me. Maybe they were busy, but I made contact.

Examiner

What words from ATC would make it enough in Class C?

Student

Probably "standby" is enough. I guess if they said "Cessna 345 standby" that would be clearer, but I'd still go in since I called.

Incorrect. In Class C, ATC must respond using your callsign before two-way communication is established. "Aircraft calling" is not enough.

Decode this METAR and tell me whether it is acceptable for your VFR departure from a non-towered Class G airport: `KABC 151455Z 18012G22KT 4SM -RA BR BKN012 OVC025 18/16 A2992`.

Student

It's the 15th at 1455 Zulu. Winds 180 at 12 gusting 22. Four miles, light rain, mist. Clouds broken 1,200 and overcast 2,500. Altimeter 29.92. It's VFR, so I'd probably depart and stay low until it gets better.

If pattern altitude is 1,000 AGL, what does a 1,200 foot broken ceiling do to your departure and emergency options?

Student

It's tight, but it's still above pattern altitude, so I think it's legal enough. I'd just be careful and not climb into it.

Examiner feedback

Decoding was mostly good, but the risk decision was weak. A 1,200-foot ceiling with rain, mist, gusts, and little room above pattern altitude is marginal and needs a conservative depart, delay, or return plan.

Your destination TAF includes `FM151700 24015G25KT 4SM TSRA BKN020CB TEMPO 1518/1522 2SM +TSRA OVC010CB`. Your ETA is 1930Z. Can you plan this as a VFR arrival?

Student

The prevailing visibility is 4 miles, so technically that's VFR. I'd go and see what it looks like when I get closer.

What makes the `TEMPO 1518/1522` group operationally important for your ETA?

Student

It means it might temporarily get worse, but temporary sounds like it may not happen. If I'm VFR when I arrive, I can land.

Examiner feedback

That misses the go/no-go issue. Your ETA is inside the TEMPO window with heavy thunderstorms, 2 miles visibility, and a 1,000-foot overcast cumulonimbus layer. That is not a sound VFR arrival plan.

Examiner

A Convective SIGMET covers the middle third of your VFR route, but your EFB radar loop shows a gap that looks clear right now. You can probably get through the gap in 25 minutes. What do you do?

Student

I'd launch and watch the radar. If the gap is still there, I'd go through it. I don't want to cancel just because of a SIGMET if there's a clear path.

Examiner

How old might the displayed radar picture be by the time you use it tactically, and why does that matter near thunderstorms?

Student

Maybe a few minutes old, but I'd keep refreshing it. If it starts closing, I'll turn around.

Examiner feedback

Unsafe. EFB radar is not tactical thunderstorm avoidance, and a Convective SIGMET should drive a delay, cancellation, or wide reroute for a VFR private pilot.

Overall result

Unsatisfactory. Student showed overconfidence, weak risk management, and bust-level misunderstandings of Class B, Class C, and convective weather decision-making.
